Key January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

The new year signals fresh tax deadlines. January 2026 encompasses critical individual tax obligations, including estimated taxes, tip reporting, and strategic tax planning. Let’s delve into the key dates and set your Schedule for success this tax season.

January 12 - Employee Tip Reporting Deadline -

If you earn tips as a part of your employment and accumulated over $20 in gratuities during December, you must report these to your employer by January 12. IRS Form 4070 or a signed statement listing your name, address, Social Security number, and employer details can be utilized for this purpose. Ensure to include the month or period of the report and the total tips received.

Your employer is obligated to retain FICA taxes and income tax from your standard wages for these tips. If your regular wages don’t cover the FICA and tax withholding, any outstanding withholding will be reported on your W-2 in box 8. The uncollected amount should be settled when you file your annual tax return.

January 15 - Fourth Quarter Estimated Tax Payment Due -

January 15 is the deadline for your final quarterly estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year. Avoid penalties by making payments on time. If your estimated tax payment isn’t made by this date, you’ll need to file your 2025 tax return and pay any taxes owed by February 2, 2026, to bypass a penalty.

Weekends & Holidays

When a deadline lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or recognized holiday, it extends to the following business day that isn’t a holiday.
